I had fun creating an I Spy with my group yesterday. I was thinking about it last night, and there are so many things that you could do with this activity. For younger students, I thought about using those wooden ABC blocks and creating an I Spy in which students would find different letters in the text written, or even using this activity as a whole or small group when an adult would read off letters for student to spy. Also, children could look at the objects and think about things that rhyme in their picture. As we talked in class today, Thursday, I agree that this activity could be done in so many different ways. I liked this activity because if it engaged me, as an adult, it will engage younger students.
This activity reminded me of an activity that my kindergarten class did while on a field trip. While at Mc Farland Park, the park ranger asked students to look around the woods to try and find different letters. I overheard some of the students say that there was no way that they were going to find the first letter of their name. Within minutes, those students became excited when they had found the first letter of their name. I think this would be a fun activity to do in the classroom. It would be fun for students to take a picture of something in the classroom, on the playground, or in the building. After taking a picture, students could try and find letters within that picture. Older students could try to create words instead of letters with the pictures.
I also enjoyed creating the What is ISU? book using iPhoto. I enjoyed creating the slide show first and then having each person in the group write what they thought about each picture. I liked this idea because it allowed for everyone to contribute their ideas to the iBook. There are so many books that can be made using this activity, for instance, the students could create a book that talks about things they like about school. As a future teacher, I want to use this activity in my classroom to promote collaboration and learning.
I really enjoyed the I Spy activity too! There are so many things that can be done with it. For example, it can be used with older students because I had never thought about it being used with poetry. It would be a fun way for students to get involved in creating poetry.
ReplyDeleteThe field trip activity reminded me of something I had seen. My friend recently got married and for a gift, a friend took pictures around our community, recognizable places that spelled out her last night (Orton). I never thought of doing something similar in my class until now. I could give the students disposable or digital camera and have them find items that spelled their name.
ReplyDeleteThat is a really cool idea, Mallory. Also, I think that the I Spy activity was really fun, and I've been thinking about how to do this in other ways and how you could modify it or different grades and for younger kids and for kids with special needs.
